Dr. Joao Pereira is the Clinical Director of Romão de Sousa Foundation in Lisbon, coordinating the Residential Therapeutic Community Casa de Alba and the Open Dialogue Project in the community, co-financed by the General Directorate of Health.

He holds a Doctorate in Psychotherapy and Counseling Psychology by Middlesex Universiy and Metanoia Institute, was Assistant Professor at the University of Évora between 2014 and 2017, having also taught at the University of East London and at the Metanoia Institute, where he continues to collaborate as a supervisor for Masters and Doctoral students.

He lived and worked in Barcelona for 2 years and for about 10 years in the United Kingdom, working mostly in the National Health Service (NHS) where he developed his PhD project in a hospital unit specialized in Personality Disorders. He is a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society and a Registered Psychotherapist with UKCP.

In recent years he has dedicated himself to the study of therapeutic environments as part of the international group “Enabling Environments” led by the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK). He is member of the “International Collective” of the International Network of Democratic Therapeutic Communities (INDTC) and member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the International Journal of Therapeutic Communitties of Emerald Publishers. He is also a promoter of the psychiatric system Open Dialogue, leading the first pilot project in Portugal and the first training course.

He has published several articles, having recently edited and co-authored the books Schizophrenia and Common Sense published by Springer-Nature and the book The Neurobiology-Psychotherapy-Pharmacology Intervention Triangle published by Vernon Press.
